Notes on teaching Building technology

"The bt assignment consists of thee parts: structural design, climate design with installations and materialization. These elements are related to each other and in combination they make the architectural quality. We strongly support that students have above average (or even high) ambitions with regard to sustainability and energy saving expressed in their chosen climate and installation concept, in relation to the thermal performance of the envelope and load bearing structure. In order to keep track on all the balls they need to keep up in the air during the design process I have made a drawing, representing a three dimensional table, with ‘three’ (more is also possible) load bearing alternatives, three climate / installations alternatives and the guidelines<> consequences for the quality of the architecture and built environment. It is up to the students to decide which cubes need to be filled. All in all it looks like a Rubrick’s cube. Maybe rotating the planes gets too confusing, however it is a nice idea to get this metaphor a bit further".
